Postscript July 3

That last epistle was a bit long and when I did my paste it deletes the space between paragraphs. Anyway I somehow hit a wrong photo too. So I’m sending this one just to show I’m alive and well if bumpy from my bites. Picked up something from pharmacist today that is helping those.
Anyway these self portraits, one on the rock by the Atlantic and the other using the computer on the campground picnic table were just kind of a fun experiments. Traveling alone has a couple of negatives (probably a few more that I haven’t owned up to) –you don’t get in the photos, but I’m working on that, and there’s no one to share what you see and do “did you see that moose?” I’m trying to commensate by recording into my little device and writing this blog. I know there are at least a few readers and I’m sorry if I not too concise. It’s just that if you were here I’d bore you with the same comments! I often think of what I’ll write as I’m driving. Unfortunately or perhaps fortunately, there’s a lot I leave out. As I write now, I am observing a beautiful sunset over the Bra’d’Or Lakes and hills right out my van windows. Of course today has again been a memory replay as I visited areas where Partnership sailed 14 years ago. My thought as driving out of Badeck: I am so thankful we had that wonderful experience. We had one of our best ever sails after leaving Badeck with Kate Worland on the wheel. Today might have provided a good duplicate with strong southwest wind. The memory of it all was very clear, if a bit poignant. I had considered sea kayaking out of Badeck today, but that might have been challenging with the wind. And then today was another of my “wrong turn” days. I won’t go into detail but it happens a lot. Another challenge when there is no one to check the map or assist in reading the signs. Greta struggled too, telling me to turn and there was NO STREET. Eventually between the two of us and occasionally asking for directions. For example in Glace Bay, Greta finally found the Miners Museum so I thought she could get me out of town. I think I went in a large circle and ended up about at the starting point. So I stopped a man on the street. I a heavy local brogue accent he said, “Well now I don’t drive myselt, but I think I can give you a simple way. You’ll have to turn around somehow (pointing at Big Mama on the narrow street) and then make a left at that corner. Go to a really big church and the next street turn right. It’s longer way but not as many turns. You’ll eventually come to the road to Sydney.” Amazingly his way avoided the one lane construction zone coming into town that I was dreading in the 5 p.m. traffic.

An earlier in the day wrong turn, led me to the English Town Ferry dock. The ferry was not running today because the new ferry was being delivered! I heard about it on the cbc program while eating breakfast. When I discovered where I was, low and behold there was the new ferry right in front of me, being towed into the dock by the Canadian Coast Guard. A great photo op before I turned around and headed back to the “correct” turn!

OK enough. It’s just good to have someone to visit with. So maybe now I’ll play Spider Solitaire. It’s a new bad habit of mine! Happy and Safe 4th to you all.

And do you remember that dinner at the Badeck (?) Oyster Bar with the tubs of mussels? You're bringing back some great memories.

Though you don't have a travel companion to share your experiences with, how great that you can share them with us on the blog! Glad you're taking the time to document it all, down to the bowl of chowder -- yum!

You and Greta are having quite an adventure. The new ferry must have been exciting. Were you on the maiden voyage? Have you tried good old fashioned Vic's Vapo Rub for your bug bites? The camphor calms the itch right away and bugs hate it so it acts as a repellant also. However, the smell may repel humans also. Sometimes not a good thing. Jim and I leave on the 17th for CA. Can't wait to get home. Safe travels and big blessings, Betty

I can relate to your comment about composing your blog while driving...only to forget that perfect prose when you finally get in in touch with the computer or a journal! What a great idea to bring along a voice recorder! Use it!
Happy trails,
